1999 was the first season of operation for Whales-n-Sails Adventures and from a whale sighting point of view, was a great success. The most abundant and most commonly sighted whale in the Bay of Fundy in 1999 was, ironically, the rare North Atlantic right whale (world population of fewer than 325 of these animals). A close second, however, was the fin back whale, with occasional sightings of humpback whales, minke whales, sei whales, and one very unusual encounter with a family group of 8 orca whales. Harbour porpoise were a daily occurance as were seals, and the friendly Atlantic white-sided dolphin was an occasional encounter in 1999.

We encountered basking sharks almost daily and were treated to views (quick glimpses) of bluefin tuna several times throughout the summer. We also were able to see schools of herring as they swam near the surface.

Pelagic sea birds were abundant in 1999 with regular sightings of greater shearwaters, Wilson's and Leach's storm petrels, Atlantic puffins, northern gannets, black guillemots, razorbills, and common murres. Occasional sightings included the northern fulmar, sooty shearwater, manx shearwater, parasitic jaeger and pomarine jaeger. Terns, gulls, cormorants, loons, ducks, eagles and herons of various types were also common daily sightings.
