Plans for our 2008 season
Whale Watching trips - June 20th to September 30th, 2008 - Join us for one of our daily whale watching trips to the whale feeding grounds located near Grand Manan. Common whale species for the area include the finback, humpback, minke, and North Atlantic right whales. Other species are possible. We also see harbour porpoise, white-sided dolphin, basking sharks, and the abundance and variety of sea birds are a bird watcher's dream. Every trip should be considered a "bird watching trip" as well as a whale watching trip.
For an idea of what we see take a look at some of our reports from previous years HERE
Other trips of interest: Birdwatching and "around the Island" trips - Last week of May to June 19th (one trip per week) - Again this year we will be doing some trips with the Elderhostel program from the Marathon Inn, which are generally small groups, so we always have room for those of you who would like to join us. Some of the trips will be to the Murre Ledges and some will be a circumnavigation of the island of Grand Manan. Trips will be the 1st good weather day of each week - Call for more information. Following is a brief description of these trips:
Murre Ledges trip - These are a series of rock ledges about 7 miles south of Grand Manan and are known nesting areas for a number of pelagic birds. We can usually expect to see murres, razorbills and often some Atlantic puffins, northern gannets, eider ducks, cormorants, storm-petrels and possibly others. There is always an abundance of seals in the area.
"Around the Island" trips - This trip takes us around Grand Manan and the other islands which make up the Grand Manan group. Usually lots of birds, seals, geology, fishing and aquaculture activities and great coastal scenery.
These two trips are 6 to 7 hours in length and include professional interpretation @ $85.00/person. You do not have to be part of the Elderhostel program to participate - This is open the the public. To find out more about the Elderhostel program contact the Marathon Inn at Tel: (506) 662 8488 * Toll free (888) 660-8488 or mhl@nbnet.nb.ca
Thursday Mornings in July - "Dark-Side" trip - Every Thursday morning in July at 7:30 you are welcome to join us for a trip to the "Dark-Side" of Grand Manan. With its high cliffs and strong tidal currents, this side of Grand Manan offers some spectacular scenery, great bird watching and usually a few whales too. This is the western side of the Island which has limited access from the land, and as such, offers a view of a rugged wilderness still untouched by development. A great trip - $55.00/person.
Our Marine Biologist - We are pleased that marine biologist and educator Laurie Murison will be part of our team as our on-board naturalist again this season. Laurie is a leading authority on the Bay of Fundy and has been working with the whales and other marine life of the Bay since 1982. She is a lecturer for Elderhostel (Marathon Inn), Whale Camp and other naturalist groups visiting the Island and is the Managing Director of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station and Museum. Each summer Laurie has worked as a naturalist on a whale watching boat and has spent well over 1000 days on the Bay of Fundy with the whales. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from Laurie's knowledge and experience.
