Review of our 2007 season

Photo Galleries here featuring 2006 season photos.

Whale Watching trips - 2007 was our most successful season ever!! We had 100% whale sightings on our whale watching trips this year. While we have always maintained the best whale sighting record in the area, this season was exceptional. (Generally we miss seeing whales 1 to 3 trips a season which is a very good record.) There were lots of whales us to see and there were lots of sea birds too. All of this was caused by an abundance of herring (fish that most whales and sea birds feed on) in the area throughout the whole summer.

Finback whales, minke whales and humpback whales were present all summer and into the fall and we had North Atlantic right whales from early August through into the fall. We saw basking sharks just about every week and we saw several ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Harbour porpoise and harbour seals were daily sightings.

Pelagic sea birds have been very abundant for several seasons now with this year being really good again. Of particular interest were the large numbers of Northern fulmars in June, July and August. These birds are more likely to visit our area in the fall, winter and early spring, but this summer they were very abundant. We saw and managed to get a good photo of an adult plumage Sabine's Gull, an occasional visitor to our area from the arctic and west coast of North America.

Our Marine Biologist - We are pleased that marine biologist and educator Laurie Murison was part of our team as our on-board naturalist again this season. Laurie is a leading authority on the Bay of Fundy and has been working with the whales and other marine life of the Bay since 1982. She is a lecturer for Elderhostel (Marathon Inn), Whale Camp and other naturalist groups visiting the Island and is the Managing Director of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station and Museum. Each summer Laurie has worked as a naturalist on a whale watching boat and has spent well over 1000 days on the Bay of Fundy with the whales. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from Laurie's knowledge and experience.
